Health/Genetics (Must Read)

These fish contain may contain the Marble Gene and Dragonscale Gene. Because of this, they may be prone to:

  • Drastic Color Changing
  • Diamond Eye
  • Tumors

There are no cures for the above.

Drastic color changes in healthy fish is caused by the marble gene. This gene is a transposon, a jumping gene, that can move its location in a genome. When and where it moves dictates the fish’s coloration. Color changes are usually quicker and more dramatic when the fish is young and tends to settle down as the fish ages, though some will continue changing colors for life!

Diamond Eye may be caused by dragonscale genes. The dragonscale gene causes thickening of the scales, which make them more prominent looking. These scales can grow over the fish’s eyes, and may causing complete blindness. If you suspect your fish may be blind, do not rearrange their tank. Tap on the glass lightly before feeding time and always feed in the same spot. Diamond Eye does not decrease lifespan.

Tumors have no treatment but many fish with tumors live their full lifespan, depending on where on the body the tumor is growing. Make sure the water remains clean to help prevent infection.
